Objectives

In this WP International Conferences and Specialized Seminars on topics related to Engineering and Applied Sciences will be organized while students from TC will carry out undergraduate and graduate thesis in MS organizations that will be jointly supervised by two members of the Network. This conference series are organized every two years by NTUA under the chairmanship of the coordinator of this Network. The previous meeting of OPT was held in Kos Island in 2014 and attracted more than 450 participants. The second edition of this conference series will be held in Corfu Island, Greece in 2016 and the third in Rhode Island in 2018. OPT is organized under the auspices of the International Society for Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (ISSMO), the Transportation Research Board (TRB), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS), the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers (HITE), and the Greek Association for Computational Mechanics (GRACM). The purpose of the OPT conferences is to bring together the scientific community working in the broader field of Engineering and Applied Sciences Optimization including problems formulation, computational methods and software development. OPTI 2014 will facilitate the exchange of ideas in topics of mutual interests and will serve as a platform for establishing links between research groups with complementary activities. OPT conferences will facilitate the exchange of ideas in topics of mutual interests and will serve as a platform for establishing links between research groups with complementary activities. Thus, the communities of Mathematical Programming and Nature-Inspired Search Algorithms will become more familiar with important application areas arising from real-world problems. These areas range from practical applications in structural, aero-space, mechanical, civil, chemical, naval and bio-engineering to applied problems in economics, physics and biology. Moreover, the Computational Mechanics Community will be exposed to advanced numerical methods and software tools which can highly assist in tackling combinatorial optimization problems

Description of work and role of partners

WP8 - International conferences, seminars and diploma theses on engineering and applied sciences optimization and optimization driven architecture [Months: 1-48]
NTUA
In order to reinforce the connection between the members of the Network three training actions will be implemented: (1) Organization of International Conferences, (2) Organization of Specialized Scientific Seminars and (3) Joint supervision of Diploma Theses. Task 8.1: International Conference Series on Engineering and Applied Sciences Optimization Sessions related to specific topics of the Conference are introduced by keynote lectures, with high international reputation in the field, and complemented by invited Minisymposia, organized by recognized experts in research areas of current interest, as well as by contributed papers submitted directly to the Conference secretariat. The conference topics include: Logistics, Transportation, Traffic & Telecommunication Networks, Structural Optimization, Operational Research, Metaheuristics, Multidisciplinary and Multiphysics Design Optimization. The main objective is to develop a platform where: (i) The communities of Mathematical Programming and Nature-Inspired Search Algorithms will become more familiar with important application areas with great social impact and that arise from real-world problems. These areas range from practical applications in structural, aero-space, mechanical, civil, chemical, naval and bio-engineering to applied problems in management, economics, health, physics, biology etc. (ii) Furthermore, communities of Applied Sciences and Engineering will benefit from this interaction, since they will be exposed to advanced computational methods and software tools which can highly assist these communities in tackling combinatorial optimization problems. The two sub-tasks of the WP correspond to the two events in 2016 and 2018: (a) 2nd International Conference on Engineering and Applied Sciences Optimization (OPT-ii 2016, September 2016, Corfu Island, Greece), (b) 3rd International Conference on Engineering and Applied Sciences Optimization (OPT-iii 2018, June 2018, Rhode Island, Greece). Task 8.2: Diploma Theses In the framework of this Network it is anticipated that during each year of the project students will visit MS/AC and TC participants in order to carry out the Diploma Theses in areas related to the project subject. These Diploma Theses will Page 28 of 48 be supervised by two members of the Network (one originated from the source TC participant and one from the host MC participant). Three to four Diploma Theses are expected to be carried out per year of the project Task 8.3: Specialized Seminars on Optimization Driven Architecture Specialized seminars related to specific topics of the Engineering and Applied Sciences Optimization in Architecture will be organized and recognized experts (members of the consortium) will be invited to give tutorial courses. The four subtasks of the WP correspond to the four events one each year of the project: (i) 1st International Seminar on Optimization Driven Architecture (OptArch-i 2016, June 2016, Athens, Greece), (ii) 2nd International Seminar on Optimization Driven Architecture (OptArch-ii 2017, June 2017, Paris, France), (iii) 3rd International Seminar on Optimization Driven Architecture (OptArch-iii 2018, June 2018, Lemessos, Cyprus) and (iv) 4th International Seminar on Optimization Driven Architecture (OptArch-iv 2019, June 2019, Montreal, Canada).
